Matthias Winckelmann

Why are the world's biggest companies turning to abstract visual design?

In Episode #76, Ross is joined by Matthias Winckelmann, Co-Founder and one of the two Creative Directors of someform Studio.

Before launching someform Studio, Matthias worked as Managing Partner and Director at the creative ensemble foam Studio and as Head of 3D at the internationally acclaimed design & branding studio ManvsMachine in London.

Ross and Matthias discuss why the world’s biggest companies are using abstract design to stand out, what this means for designers, and how we can avoid carrying our current biases in the future.

Highlights

There's a responsibility for us as creatives to shape the future

I find it fascinating how we're so drawn to these categories and narrow things down into little boxes

Abstract visual languages (are) much more globally unified because it's just human nature that sharp things feel sharp. Because think visual perception is a very primal instinct

We Googled ‘Car of the Future’, and it's incredible how stereotypical every single image looks

They don't have a physical product, and their product is knowledge. It makes a lot of sense to go abstract and use images that are less descriptive

Blade Runner defined a generation of creative’s perceptions of the future
